Originally founded by Michael and Judith Dinowitz, the New York ColdFusion User Group is dedicated to bringing the best of breed in ColdFusion information to the developers in the New York City area. We typically meet on the second Tuesday of every month at the NYU Medical Center in midtown Manhattan.

As I am both the manager of the New York ColdFusion User Group and the speaker from last night, I can't give much of a wrap up regarding my performance. What I can say, however, is that I was totally blown away to have so many people show up to watch me present. I love jQuery. To me, not only is it a great Javascript library, it is an essential tool that is absolutely necessary for building rich user experiences in today's web world. Mastering The Art Of AJAX Development Using ColdFusion

This presentation demonstrates how to best use the ColdFusion server to power AJAX applications working with any number of front end technologies including, but not limited to, jQuery, Spry, and ColdFusion AJAX controls.

Almost a year ago, Raymond Camden came up to the New York ColdFusion User Group to help kick off the new year with a new outlook. Now, almost 12 months later, he has come back to help usher us in 2009 with a great presentation on using AJAX with ColdFusion.

While his presentation was quite good and covered a wide variety of technologies including jQuery, SPRY, and ColdFusion 8's own built-in AJAX functionality, the content and the timing of the topic were quite comical. As Ray himself noted in his slides, AJAX as a technology has been around for close to a decade. It's had such a slow adoption period due to all the cross browser complications (the browser wars); but now, as Ray demonstrated, AJAX is truly accessible to all developers.

Railo U.S. Tour

Gert Franz of Railo

Gert Franz, CEO of Railo and member of the recently founded CFML advisory committee, will be visiting to present an overview of Railo, and what the advantages of using Railo are for CFML developers. He'll also be talking about the upcoming open-source conversion of Railo, and what that means for the community and the developers. Of course, Gert will have some free versions of the Railo software to hand out, and some other goodies as well.

Railo is a CFML engine that runs on a wide variety of Java servlet engines, and provides a cost-effective, high performance alternative to using Adobe's ColdFusion engine. As you may have heard, at the Scotch on the Rocks ColdFusion conference in Scotland in June, Railo announced that they are partnering with JBoss to convert their software to a completely free, open-source offering.
